  1. I think that you may be confusing lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) for Red fir. The needles are in fascicles of 2 and grow all around the branch. In the red fir, the needles would not be in fassicles and they would grow upwards. The bark is scaly and the branches grow upwards. In A. magnifica the bark is furrowed and the branches grow parrallel to the ground.
