NATIVE
Stem: 5--13 cm; stolons many, matted. 

Leaf: basal 6--19 mm, +- linear to spoon-shaped, 1-veined, densely gray-tomentose; cauline 5--20 mm (most proximal 11--20 mm), linear. 

Inflorescence: heads 2--7; inflorescence cyme-like; peduncles < 5 mm; involucre 4--8 mm, base woolly; phyllaries narrow and acute (pistillate) or wide and blunt (staminate), distally dark brown or black. 

Flower: pistillate corolla 3--4.5 in fruit, staminate corolla generally 2.8--4.5 mm. 

Fruit: 0.6--1.6 mm, papillate or smooth; pappus 4--5.5 mm. 

Ecology: Meadows, snow basins, ridges; 

Elevation: 1800--3900 m. 

Bioregional Distribution: KR, NCoRH, CaRH, SNH, SnBr, W&I; 

Distribution Outside California: to Alaska, northwestern Canada, Montana, New Mexico.
