Stem: erect, < 1 m, puberulent. 

Leaf: petiole 5--25 mm; blade 1--6 cm, lanceolate to elliptic or ovate. 

Inflorescence: axis in bud recurved at tip; buds pendent. 

Flower: hypanthium 1--3 mm; sepals all coming free; corolla rotate, petals 6--12 mm, pink-lavender, generally spotted, claw broad, 2-lobed, blade lanceolate to widely ovate or diamond-shaped; stamens 8, subtended by ciliate scales, anthers alike, pollen blue-gray; ovary 4-grooved, stigma not exserted beyond anthers. 

Ecology: Common. Yellow-pine forest, woodland; 

Elevation: < 2500 m. 

Bioregional Distribution: CA-FP (exc SnJV), MP; 

Distribution Outside California: +- western United States, Baja California.
