Treatment from The Jepson Manual (1993):

Plant 1–5 dm, taprooted, generally densely short-hairy to tomentose

Stem ascending to erect, rarely 0

Leaf: petiole 2.5–12 cm; blade 2–12 cm, oblong to obovate, pinnately or ternate-pinnately dissected, segments 2–6 mm, thread-like to linear; cauline leaves 0 or like basal

Inflorescence: peduncle 1–3.5 dm; bractlets linear to narrowly ovate, acute, fused or not; rays 10–21, 1–8.5 cm, spreading; pedicels 5–20 mm

Flower: corolla greenish white or purplish, conspicuously tomentose

Fruit 8–22 mm, oblong-ovate to round, ± hairy; wings = or > body in width; oil tubes per rib-interval 1–4

Ecology: Dry ridges

Elevation: < 1600 m.  

Bioregional distribution: North Coast Ranges, Cascade Range Foothills, Sierra Nevada Foothills, Great Central Valley, San Francisco Bay Area, South Coast Ranges, Peninsular Ranges 

Distribution outside California: Baja California
