Treatment from The Jepson Manual (1993):

Perennial, hairy

Stems many, 10–20 cm

Leaf: lobes generally 5, linear

Inflorescence: cluster, terminal, bracted; flowers generally sessile

Flower: calyx 8–9 mm, membrane generally obscure, 1/2 calyx length; corolla funnel-shaped, tube included in calyx, white or light yellow, throat yellow, lobes 4–5 mm, white; stamens included or slightly exserted; stigmas slightly exerted

Ecology: Dry flats, openings in forest, sometimes on serpentine

Elevation: 500–3500 m.  

Bioregional distribution: Klamath Ranges, Outer North Coast Ranges, High North Coast Ranges, High Cascade Range, Warner Mountains, East of Sierra Nevada 

Distribution outside California: to British Columbia, Rocky Mtns, n Mexico

Generally self-pollinated
