Annual 10–55 cm

Stem generally erect, simple or branched at base, puberulent to short-hairy, ± glandular

Leaf 30–150 mm; blade generally > petiole, oblong to ovate, deeply lobed to compound, segments toothed to cut

Flower: pedicel 0.5–2 mm; calyx lobes 4–6 mm, 6–10 mm in fruit, ovate to lanceolate, opaque to ± translucent, puberulent, ciliate, veins raised; corolla 8–10 mm, funnel- to bell-shaped, tube pale blue, limb blue, deciduous, scales ± round; stamens 8–12 mm, ± glabrous; style 6–8 mm, short-hairy

Fruit 4–5 mm, ± spheric, short-hairy

Seeds generally 4, 2.5–3.5 mm, pitted

Ecology: Clay or gravelly slopes in grassland, fields

Elevation: < 1700 m.  

Bioregional distribution: s North Coast Ranges, c&s Sierra Nevada Foothills, Tehachapi Mountain Area, s Sacramento Valley (Sutter Buttes), San Joaquin Valley, San Francisco Bay Area, Inner South Coast Ranges, Southwestern California (except Channel Islands) 

Distribution outside California: Baja California

Plants on clay soils from SnJV, with lanceolate, opaque calyx lobes, have been called var. opaca J.T. Howell, Merced phacelia

Horticultural information: SUN, DRN: 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24.
