Treatment from The Jepson Manual (1993):

Stem 3–11 dm; hairs generally ± 0 to ± sparse, generally ± spreading, often > 1 mm, ± strigose in inflorescence

Leaves: caudex 6–33 cm, 7–37 mm wide, narrowly elliptic to oblanceolate; lower cauline generally 5–23 cm, 6–24 mm wide

Flower: corolla blue, limb generally 5–11 mm wide, sometimes smaller

Fruit: nutlets 3–5 mm, facial prickles generally 4–10, < marginal

Ecology: Meadows, along streams, open slopes, forests

Elevation: 700–3400 m.  

Bioregional distribution: Klamath Ranges, North Coast Ranges, Cascade Range, Sierra Nevada, Modoc Plateau, n East of Sierra Nevada (Sweetwater Mtns) 

Distribution outside California: w N.America

Flowering time: Jul–Aug
