Annual, 3–45 cm, erect

Leaves 1–18 cm; basal deeply lobed, sinuses or lobes toothed; cauline toothed to lobed

Inflorescence: bract (ob)ovate, generally toothed, base whitish

Flower: sepals 1–5 mm; petals 4–8 mm, (yellow-)orange; stamens 3–7 mm, outer > inner; style 3–6 mm

Fruit 8–28 mm, generally straight (or curved < 70°)

Seed 1–2 mm, grain-like, pointed-papillate; angles acute

Ecology: Sandy grassland, scrub, oak/pine woodland

Elevation: 400–1900 m.  

Bioregional distribution: n High Sierra Nevada, Tehachapi Mountain Area, San Joaquin Valley, Inner South Coast Ranges, Transverse Ranges, Peninsular Ranges, Great Basin Floristic Province, Desert 

Distribution outside California: Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Baja California
