Treatment from the Jepson Manual (1993):

Stem ascending to erect, 3–8 dm

Leaf: blade 3–12 cm, round to ovate, fleshy, glandular-hairy or becoming glabrous

Inflorescence: involucre 1 per upper axil, bell-shaped, ± glabrous to minutely glandular-hairy; bracts 5, 22–35 mm, 1/2–3/4 fused; flowers 6 per involucre

Flower: perianth 40–60 mm, narrowly funnel-shaped, magenta

Fruit 6–11 mm, elliptic

Ecology: Dry, rocky or sandy places

Elevation: < 2500 m.  

Bioregional distribution: s San Joaquin Valley, White and Inyo Mountains, Desert 

Distribution outside California: to w Colorado, Arizona, Baja California
