NATIVE

Habit: Perennial herb 10--70 cm, branched, proximally leafy. 

Leaf: 5--30 cm, entire to lobed. 

Inflorescence: involucre 8--22 mm, generally +- mealy and black-hairy; outer phyllaries linear to deltate, << inner. 

Flower: 13--75; ligule yellow. 

Fruit: 3.5--8 mm, not wider at tip, pale brown to +- red, smooth or outermost scabrous on ribs; pappus scales 15--30, 1--3 mm, silvery, bristles 4--7 mm, plumose. 

Ecology: Common. Moist, rocky meadows, open conifer woodland, sagebrush scrub; 

Elevation: 1000--3400 m. 

Bioregional Distribution: KR, NCoRH, CaRH, SNH, MP; 

Distribution Outside California: to British Columbia, South Dakota, Colorado. 

Flowering Time: Apr--Jul 

Note: Highly variable.
