Plant hairs sparse, rarely 0

Stem 1, 4–12 dm

Leaves: basal 10–20 cm

Flower: petals 15–25 mm

Fruit 3–6 cm (including beak), 5–10 mm wide; pedicel spreading to ascending, 10–25 mm

Ecology: Disturbed places, fields, roadsides

Elevation: < 1000 m.  

Bioregional distribution: California Floristic Province (except mins) 

Distribution outside California: temperate worldwide; native to Mediterranean Europe
