Treatment from The Jepson Manual (1993):

Perennial from thick taproot and branching caudex, very glaucous, green

Stem 2–7 dm, slender, generally ascending, not rooting; lower stem minutely stellate; upper stem ± glabrous

Leaf: blade glabrous or minutely stellate, 1° lobes 5, those of lower stem-leaves further divided

Inflorescence open, delicate, curved, generally 1-sided

Flower: calyx 6–10 mm, finely stellate; petals 10–20 mm, pink to pink-purple

Fruit: segment 3–3.5 mm, ± inflated, obviously pitted and net-veined, back glandular-puberulent

Ecology: Dry grassy meadows

Elevation: 900–3000 m.  

Bioregional distribution: High Cascade Range, n&c High Sierra Nevada.Intergrades with  S. multifida ,  S. malviflora subsp. asprella
