Shrub or tree-like, 2–6 m

Stem: trunk bark red-brown; twigs glabrous

Leaves 4–15 mm, not clustered; stipules 0

Inflorescence < 15 cm, open; bracts narrowly ovate, papery; pedicels 0–4 mm

Flower: hypanthium 5-ribbed, nonglandular; corolla lobes ± 2 mm; ovary truncate

Ecology: Dry slopes, flats, chaparral

Elevation: 300–2000 m.  

Bioregional distribution: s Central Coast, s Outer South Coast Ranges, Transverse Ranges, Peninsular Ranges 

Distribution outside California: Baja California
