Annual

Stem 1–30 cm, spreading to erect

Leaves: basal 1–18 cm, linear to narrowly oblanceolate, blade 1–7 cm, > 3 X longer than wide, gradually tapered to petiole, obtuse to acute; cauline free (< 6 cm, linear) or disk-like (< 5 cm diam, round or squarish)

Inflorescence stalked or sessile, dense or open, 1-bracted at base; flowers 3–40

Flower: sepals 1.5–4 mm; petals 2–6 mm, white or pinkish

Fruit 1.5–4 mm

Seeds 1.2–2.3 mm, ovate to round, shiny, smooth

Ecology: Vernally moist, often disturbed places in sun or shade

Elevation: < 2300 m.  

Bioregional distribution: California Floristic Province, East of Sierra Nevada, Mojave Desert  

Distribution outside California: to British Columbia, Montana, n Mexico
