Stem 20–60 cm, simple; base bulblet-bearing
Leaves: basal 10–15 cm, withering
Inflorescence ± umbel-like; flowers 1–5, erect; bracts paired
Flower: perianth bell-shaped; sepals 10–20 mm; petals 10–40 mm, white to smoky-blue, often tinged pink, red- to black-spotted above nectary, sparsely short-hairy near nectary, nectary slightly depressed, ± ovate, densely short-hairy; anthers sagittate
Fruit erect, 3–6 cm, narrowly lanceolate
Ecology: Common. Open, gravelly places in chaparral or montane coniferous forest
Elevation: 1300–4000 m.
Bioregional distribution: High Sierra Nevada, Modoc Plateau
Distribution outside California: w Nevada
