Treatment from The Jepson Manual (1993):

Stem: 8–16 cm, branches spreading from base, glabrous or slightly cobwebby below, glandular in inflorescence

Leaves: basal in semi-erect cluster, 1–3 cm, pinnate; axis 1–3 mm wide; lobes 2–7 mm, generally > axis width

Inflorescence loose; pedicels 1–11 mm in unequal pairs

Flower: calyx 3–5 mm, glabrous or cobwebby, bright purple or purple-spotted, membrane puckered between ribs; corolla tube included in calyx, throat spreading, tube + throat = lobes, lobes widely obovate; longest stamens generally > corolla lobes; stigmas touching or > anthers

Fruit = or > calyx, widely ovoid, detaching at base

Ecology: Rocky slopes, washes

Elevation: 700–1300 m.  

Bioregional distribution: s Sierra Nevada, n San Gabriel Mountains, n San Bernardino Mountains, Mojave Desert
