Shrub, tree < 7 m, ± glabrous; crown often wider than tall

Stem: branches arched, crooked; spines 0.5–4 cm

Leaf glabrous; 1° leaflets generally 1 pair, 6–17 cm; 2° leaflets 7–17 pairs, 1–2.5 cm, oblong, length 7–9 X width

Inflorescence: raceme, 6–10 cm, spike-like

Flower: petals free, 2.5–3.5 mm

Fruit 5–20 cm, slightly narrowed between seeds, glabrous

Seeds generally 5–18, 6–7 mm, oblong

Ecology: Common. Grasslands, alkali flats, washes, bottomlands, sandy alluvial flats, mesas

Elevation: 0–1700 m.  

Bioregional distribution: San Joaquin Valley, Peninsular Ranges, Desert  

Distribution outside California: to Texas, Mexico

Flowering time: Apr–Aug
