Treatment from The Jepson Manual (1993):

Plant glabrous or slightly glandular-puberulent; glands black

Stem: branches spreading

Leaves cauline, linear to narrowly elliptic, generally entire; lower rarely pinnately lobed

Inflorescence loose, spreading; pedicels thread-like

Flower: calyx glabrous, lobes tapered, fine-pointed, membrane in fruit splitting between lobes; corolla funnel-shaped, tube generally exserted, lobes ovate-acute, pink; stamens unequally attached in throat, style and longest stamens well exerted

Fruit < calyx; valves detaching

Seeds 1–3 per chamber

Ecology: Common. Open, rocky areas in forest or meadows

Elevation: 900–3100 m.  

Bioregional distribution: Cascade Range, s Sierra Nevada Foothills, High Sierra Nevada 

Distribution outside California: Oregon

Forms large showy populations. Sspp. intergrade
