Inflorescence: pedicels in fruit 2--3 mm. 

Fruit: nutlets 2.5--4 mm, linear, coiled to recurved; margin teeth free +- to base, linear (or width at base < length). 

Ecology: Shelter of rocks, bases of shrubs, occasionally roadsides, creosote-bush scrub, Joshua-tree woodland; 

Elevation: 10--1600 m. 

Bioregional Distribution: s SN, n TR, W&I, D; 

Distribution Outside California: to southern Utah, southwestern New Mexico, northern Mexico.
