Treatment from The Jepson Manual (1993):

Annual, 1–5 dm; hairs generally sparse, short

Leaves basal, 2–10 cm, oblong-ovate, 1–2-pinnately dissected; lobes irregularly rounded, minutely bristly

Inflorescence ± scapose; clusters generally 1–2 per flower stem; bracts < ± 1 cm, ± round, awn-tipped

Flower: calyx 8–10 mm, purple-tipped, upper lip unlobed but 2(3)-awned; corolla tube 6–8 mm, pale to deep blue, upper lip entire to shallowly 2-lobed, 2–3 mm, lower lip ± 2 X upper; stamens and style exerted

Fruit: nutlet, 1.5–2 mm, tan to gray

Ecology: Common. Dry, disturbed sites, chaparral, coastal-sage scrub

Elevation: generally < 1200 m.  

Bioregional distribution: California (except Klamath Ranges, Cascade Range, n Sierra Nevada) 

Distribution outside California: to Utah, Arizona

Flowering time: Mar–Jun

Horticultural information: DRN, SUN, DRY: 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24.
