Treatment from The Jepson Manual (1993):

Rhizome 20–30 mm diam

Stem 2–5 dm, sometimes branched

Leaf 3–9 mm wide; base sometimes purplish

Inflorescence: flowers 1–2; lowest 2 bracts opposite, generally scarious, outermost 4–8 cm, 5–7 mm wide

Flower: perianth pale lilac to whitish with lilac-purple veins, tube < 12 mm, sepals < 6 cm, 2 cm wide; style branches < 25 mm, crests averaging 8 mm, stigmas 2-lobed

Ecology: Moist, grassy places

Elevation: 900–3400 m.  

Bioregional distribution: North Coast Ranges, Sierra Nevada, Inner South Coast Ranges, Transverse Ranges, Peninsular Ranges, Great Basin Floristic Province 

Distribution outside California: much of w N.America, n Mexico

Flowering time: May–Jun
