Leaf 5–25 cm, lanceolate to lance-oblong, tapered gradually to petiole; margin generally finely dentate
Inflorescences few–many, 20–80 cm including peduncle; spike 2–8 cm, ± ovoid, becoming cylindric, dense; bract ± = sepals, widely ovate, acute, not exserted
Flower: corolla lobes 2–2.5 mm, spreading, ovate, tips ± acute; stamens 4
Seeds 1–2, ± 3 mm
Ecology: Common. Weed of waste places, lawns, roadsides
Elevation: < 1600 m.
